Scouts Rally Against Copperheads in Weather-Delayed Contest
Scouts overcome delays, taking the series victory over the Copperheads
XENIA, Ohio - Scouts baseball overcame multiple weather delays and several early deficits Sunday evening, defeating the Southern Ohio Copperheads 10-7 to secure the series victory.
The Scouts improved to 2-1 on the season after using aggressive baserunning, timely hitting, and strong late-inning relief work to outlast the Copperheads in a game that lasted more than five hours.
Southern Ohio built early leads in both the second and fourth innings, but Xenia continued to answer. Dawson Cleveland tied the game in the third with a two-run double before Jack Drew followed with an RBI double to give the Scouts a 4-3 advantage.
The Copperheads regained the lead in the fourth and extended it to 7-5 in the sixth inning, but the Scouts responded with three runs in the bottom if the inning. Cleveland drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Mack Skeels and Bo Solley each forced home runs with bases-loaded opportunities to put Xenia back in front.
The Scouts continued to apply pressure on the bases throughout the contest, stealing seven bases and consistently creating scoring opportunities. Cole Rohlmeier led the effort with three stolen bases, Solley added two stolen bases, and Steven Schneider, Owen Roether, and Skeels each had a stolen base of their own.
Cleveland finished with three RBIs, while Drew added two hits and an RBI. Xenia scored 10 runs despite recording just seven hits, drawing eleven walks and capitalizing on scoring opportunities througout the evening.
Defensively, the Scouts turned three double plays to help limit Copperhead runs. The relief combination of Mason Golabek (1-0), Elijah Papalios, and Trey Tipton (SV, 1) held Southern Ohio scoreless over the final 3.2 innings, with Tipton striking out three batters and allowing no hits across the final two innings.
The Scouts take on the Grand Lake Mariners at Montgomery Field on Tuesday.
