Clippers Hold off Scouts After Early Rally
Dawson Cleveland's home run helps Scouts erase early deficit
MUSKEGON, Michigan – The Xenia Scouts battled back from an early two-run deficit to tie the game, but the Muskegon Clippers scored late to earn a 4-2 victory Tuesday night.
After evening the score through the first three innings, the Scouts remained within one run until the eighth before the Clippers added an insurance run to secure the win.
Muskegon struck first with two runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a solo home run from and an RBI single.
The Scouts answered in the second when Dawson Cleveland launched a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit in half. Xenia evened the score an inning later as Gabe Mathison crossed the plate on a wild pitch after Steven Schneider advanced to third.
The Clippers regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by before adding an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Cleveland drove in the Scouts' lone RBI with his second home run of the season, while Steven Schneider collected a team-high two hits. Owen Roether and Mayo Fernandez each added doubles as Xenia finished with five hits.
On the mound, Sid Phillips allowed two runs over four innings while striking out two. Logan Bach was charged with the loss after allowing one run in three innings of relief, and Adam Laski worked the final inning.
The Scouts play the Clippers again on Wednesday.
