Scouts Sweet the Monarchs with Third-Consecutive Win
9th inning rally scores 9 runs as Owen Roether hits a grand slam.
XENIA, Ohio - The Scouts produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the season on Sunday evening, as they scored nine runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Michigan Monarchs 17-13 at Grady's Field.
Trailing 13-8 entering their final at-bat, the Scouts rallied with nine consecutive runs, capped by Owen Roether's walk-off grand slam to complete an unforgettable victory.
Xenia jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first inning behind RBI hits from Steven Schneider, Ethan Papalios and Drew Snipes. The Monarchs responded with a five-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead before the Scouts answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and another in the fourth to regain the advantage.
Michigan tied the game in the sixth inning before taking control late. A five-run ninth inning gave the Monarchs a 13-8 lead and appeared to put the game out of reach.
The Scouts had other plans.
After loading the bases and drawing a series of walks, Xenia cut into the deficit before Roether stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. The third baseman launched a grand slam to left field, completing the comeback and sending the Scouts home with a 17-13 victory.
Roether led the offense with four hits, five RBI and the game-winning home run. Ethan Papalios also drove in five runs, while Steven Schneider recorded two RBI and scored three times. Ethan Moore crossed the plate three times and reached base three times in the win.
The Scouts continued their aggressive approach on the bases, stealing eight bags during the contest. Schneider swiped three bases, while Bo Solley and Ethan Moore each stole two.
On the mound, Zachary Pearrow (1-0) earned the victory after recording the final out of the ninth inning before the Scouts completed the comeback in the bottom half of the frame. Caleb Shreve helped keep the Monarchs in line by retiring seven straight batters in the middle of the game.
The Scouts improved to 5-4 on the season and will return to action Tuesday as they face the Muskegon Clippers and look to improve their winning streak.
